Yoga in School: How We Integrate A calming Activity Before Lessons Start

At Crossing Borders, we begin our mornings with calm and intention. Every morning, our students gather with their teachers and begin the day with gentle movements and breathing exercises. Yoga provides the perfect balance: movement that energizes the body, combined with breathing and stillness that quiets the mind. This helps students transition into the school day in a calm, focused, and positive way.

When students arrive in the morning, they first have a few minutes to get comfortable in the classroom. Once everyone is settled, teachers gather the class together for a short yoga session. This usually lasts just a few minutes, but it makes a big difference in how the day begins.

Our yoga activities are designed to be playful and easy to follow. Teachers guide students through gentle stretches, playful poses, and slow breathing. Sometimes students stretch like a sloth, balance like a toucan, or take slow breaths while sitting quietly on their mats. The goal is not to be perfect. It is simply just to move, relax, and start the day together. Even our youngest students participate in their own way. Toddlers may follow along with simple movements or sit quietly with their teacher. Our older students enjoy trying new poses and learning how to balance.

After our yoga session, students transition into the day’s lessons and classroom activities.

Because they have already had a moment to move, breathe, and settle their energy, they are often more focused and ready to participate. This calm start helps create a positive classroom environment where children feel relaxed, attentive, and ready to learn.

Yoga may sound like something meant for adults, but it can be incredibly helpful for young children. Simple yoga movements help children become more aware of their bodies, improve their balance and coordination, and practice focusing their attention. Most importantly, yoga helps children learn how to pause and regulate their emotions. When children learn how to take a deep breath or stretch their bodies, they also learn ways to calm themselves and feel more in control. Research shows that school-based yoga programs can improve children’s initiative, self-control, and resilience while reducing behavioral challenges.

For our students, yoga is more than an activity. It is a moment to breathe, move, and connect with themselves before a day full of learning begins. And sometimes, the best way to start the  day is simply to stretch, breathe, and smile together.
